I will stop Kurt Okraku from seeking third GFA term, says former veep George Afriyie
Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Vice-President George Afriyie says he will do everything within his power to prevent Kurt Okraku from serving a third term as president of the association.
Okraku was elected GFA president in 2019 and is currently serving his second term in office after being re-elected in 2023, going unopposed, with Mr Afriyie being disqualified from contesting the elections.
His potential bid for a third term was made possible after the GFA Congress approved an amendment extending the presidential term limit from two four-year terms to three.
However, Afriyie, a former GFA FA Cup Committee chairman and Black Stars Management Committee chairman, has strongly opposed the prospect of Okraku remaining in office beyond his current term.
“Kurt Okraku’s third term as GFA President will never happen,” Mr Afriyie told Sporty FM.
“I want to see a new FA President, and some of us are willing to petition the president of the land [John Mahama].”
Afriyie questioned the decision to change the term limit, arguing that Ghana’s national constitution itself restricts a president to two terms.
“Even our constitution governing our country allows the president to only run for two terms, and there was a reason why the Normalisation Committee kept the GFA presidential term at two terms of four,” he added.
The GFA’s Ordinary Congress approved the proposed constitutional amendment in August, with an overwhelming majority of delegates voting in favour.
Of the 124 delegates present, 114 voted for the change, six voted against it, and three abstained, representing 91.9% approval.
The amendment allows the GFA president and Executive Council members to serve up to three four-year terms, meaning they could remain in office for a maximum of 12 years.
Congress also approved a change to the composition of the Executive Council, elevating the Women’s Football Representative to the position of Second Vice-President.
Okraku has not yet formally confirmed whether he intends to seek a third term, but he has been widely tipped to contest the next GFA presidential election.
Afriyie, who narrowly lost the 2019 GFA presidential election to Okraku, has previously expressed his interest in influencing the direction of Ghanaian football.
