How the South East Maths Olympiad by Alex Onyia is Transforming Nigeria’s Next Generation

The South East Maths Olympiad, organized by Alex Onyia, CEO of Educare and widely known as the “Sultan of Software,” represents a landmark initiative in transforming mathematics education across Nigeria’s South East region.
Launched as a large-scale, technology-driven competition, it engaged over 11,500 students from the five South Eastern states namely; Anambra, Enugu, Imo, Abia, and Ebonyi in a fully computer-based testing (CBT) format, making it accessible to children from all socioeconomic backgrounds.
The Olympiad’s main examination round took place on Saturday, February 28, 2026, following a highly successful mock exam that already saw massive participation and enthusiasm. Alex Onyia reported smooth execution with zero incidents despite the logistical challenge of coordinating thousands of young participants across multiple centers and states. Students, teachers, parents, guardians, and supervisors all returned home safely, underscoring the event’s emphasis on safety, inclusivity, and flawless organization.

What set this Olympiad apart was its commitment to equity and deeper learning. Every registered child participated regardless of economic status; no one was left behind. The 100% CBT format ensured uniform conditions, instant scoring, and immediate feedback. Participants could view their results right away, review their answers, and access explanations for incorrect responses. This approach turned the competition into a powerful learning tool, addressing curriculum gaps (such as algebra and quadratic equations) while sparking genuine interest in mathematics.
Reports from teachers highlighted remarkable spillover effects: even JSS1 students who joined the junior category had advanced to cover up to JSS3-level topics. The event ignited unprecedented seriousness toward schoolwork across the region, with students described as “on fire” in states like Imo and Anambra during mock preparations.

The competition unfolded in categories covering primary and junior secondary levels, with centers buzzing in cities like Umuahia (Abia), Nnewi (Anambra), Awka, Onitsha, and Enugu. Photos and videos shared by Onyia captured the excitement children focused at computer stations, supervisors overseeing batches, and vibrant atmospheres in every venue. The initiative welcomed participants based solely on living or schooling in the South East, open to all nationalities and tribes.

Looking ahead, the climax arrived on Saturday, March 7, 2026, when the top three winners in each category battled live on AfiaTv. This broadcast finale promised intense competition and transparent selection of overall champions.
Alex Onyia has vowed to make the South East Maths Olympiad an annual event, with ambitions to scale prize money significantly (potentially up to N100 million in future editions) and build a robust database of talent. By prioritizing mathematics as the gateway to innovation, the Olympiad aims to position the South East as a hub for knowledge-driven growth, producing global-ready innovators, inventors, and a strong technical workforce.
Collaborating with partners like Intervention for South East Education (ISEE) and supported by individual donors, foundations, and media coverage, this initiative demonstrates how technology, inclusivity, and bold vision can reshape education at scale.
As Onyia often emphasizes: “If we get it right in Maths, we have fixed education permanently.”
The South East Maths Olympiad is more than a contest, it’s a movement igniting a mathematical and innovation renaissance in the region.
