Five People Killed As Two Buildings Collapse In Kano
Five people have been killed, while 11 others rescued following two separate building collapses in Kano State.
The incidents occurred at Gaida in Kumbotso Local Government Area and along Kurna in Fagge Local Government Area, with both structures reportedly under construction at the time of the incidents.
The Kano State Fire Service confirmed the incidents in a statement issued on Sunday by its spokesperson, Saminu Abdullahi.
According to Abdullahi, six construction workers were trapped after one of the buildings collapsed at Gaida.
He said four of the trapped workers were rescued unconscious and immediately evacuated to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, where they were later confirmed dead by medical personnel.
The deceased were identified as Sunusi Siraju, 18; Bashir Ibrahim, 20; Ibrahim, 26; and Abubakar, 30.
In a separate incident at Kurna in Fagge Local Government Area, an Islamiyya school building collapsed following a distress call received by the fire service at about 2:40pm from one Umar Sani.
The spokesperson said eight students were rescued alive from the rubble, while another student was pulled out unconscious and taken to hospital but later died.
The deceased student was identified as 14-year-old Khadija Muhammad.
Among those rescued were 13-year-olds Hassana Issa, Usaina Issa and Zuleyhat M. Gambu.
The fire service said the immediate cause of the two collapses had yet to be established as of the time of filing the report.
Abdullahi, however, said a preliminary investigation would be conducted to determine the circumstances that led to the incidents.
He urged building owners, contractors and construction workers to adhere strictly to safety regulations and approved building standards, warning that compliance was essential to preventing further loss of lives and property.
