Former Ghanaian boxer Michael Ayitey Okai, popularly known as Ayitey Powers, has been released after the Dansoman Circuit Court discontinued proceedings against him over an alleged death threat involving National Sports Authority (NSA) Director-General, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.

Ayitey Powers appeared before the court on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, after spending a week in custody in connection with the case.

The former boxer was arrested by the Accra Regional Police Command on Monday, August 24, following the circulation of a video on social media in which he was alleged to have threatened the life of Mr Ampofo Ankrah.

His arrest came after the Ghana Boxing Interim Management Committee (GBIMC) called for his arrest and prosecution over the alleged remarks.

The discontinuation of the case has paved the way for Ayitey Powers’ release, bringing an end to the criminal proceedings against him over the alleged threat.
