Fulham manager Álvaro Arbeloa has identified Nigeria international Calvin Bassey as a player who could take on a major leadership role at the Premier League club this season.

Arbeloa’s faith in the defender was demonstrated during Fulham’s final pre-season matches against Málaga and Stuttgart, when Bassey was trusted with the captain’s armband.

The responsibility reflects the growing influence of the 26-year-old within the squad.

The Fulham boss believes Bassey’s defensive qualities are particularly suited to his tactical approach.

His ability to operate effectively when the team plays with a high defensive line has impressed the Spaniard, while his attitude in training has also earned praise.

Since joining Fulham from Ajax in 2023, Bassey has established himself as a dependable member of the defence. He featured prominently last season, making 30 Premier League appearances, including 28 starts.

His performances have also earned recognition previously, with the Nigerian winning Fulham’s Player of the Season award after making 35 league appearances during the 2024/25 campaign.

Arbeloa now appears keen to make greater use of Bassey’s experience as he builds his squad for the new campaign.

The defender could become part of the leadership group alongside experienced figures such as Sander Berge, Antonee Robinson and goalkeeper Bernd Leno.

With Fulham entering a new era under Arbeloa, Bassey’s influence may extend beyond his performances on the pitch.

The manager’s comments suggest he sees the Nigerian not only as an important defender but also as someone capable of helping guide the younger members of the squad.
