Baakoniaba, a growing community near Sunyani, the Bono Regional capital, is facing a number of challenges that continue to affect the daily lives of its residents. Among the major concerns are poor road networks, inadequate water supply, sanitation problems and insufficient basic amenities.

The community is home to traders, drivers, artisans, students and other hardworking people who contribute to its development. However, residents say that some of these challenges have made their daily activities difficult. They are therefore calling for greater attention from the authorities and other stakeholders.

As a citizen journalist, I recently visited the community to interact with some residents with regard to their experiences and concerns about the problems affecting them.

“What is the major problem facing residents here?” I asked Mr. Charles Owusu, a taxi driver, who responded, “For me, the roads are one of the biggest problems. Some of them are full of potholes, making it difficult for vehicles to move, especially when it rains.”

The condition of the roads does not only affect drivers but also pedestrians, traders and schoolchildren. Poor roads can make transportation slower and more difficult, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.

How does the condition of the roads affect your work?

Mr. Charles Owusu said, “It affects my work because I spend more money maintaining my car. Sometimes passengers also complain because the journey becomes uncomfortable.”

Apart from the road situation, access to basic necessities such as water remains another concern among residents. Water is essential for cooking, cleaning and other household activities, making a reliable supply important to every community.

What about water supply in the area?
Mrs. Janet Adubea, a food vendor responded that: “Water is also a serious concern. There are times when getting enough water for cooking and other activities becomes difficult. We need a more reliable water supply.”

Sanitation is another issue that deserves attention. Proper waste disposal and regular collection of rubbish are important in keeping the community clean and protecting residents from an unhealthy environment. Residents believe that solving the sanitation problem requires cooperation between the authorities and community members.

Are there sanitation problems in Baakoniaba?

Mr. Benjamin Marfo, a carpenter said: “Yes, sanitation is another concern. Some people dump rubbish in places where they should not. We need better waste collection mechanisms, but residents must also take responsibility for keeping the environment clean.”

I totally agree with Mr. Marfo because the continuous indiscriminate dumping of refuse in the area has dire environmental and health consequences on the entire community.

The community also needs improvements in other basic facilities. Residents believe that providing adequate infrastructure would not only make life easier but also create a better environment for children, workers and businesses to thrive.

Expected improvements
I asked a seamstress by name Adwoa Asante what improvement she would you like to see most in the community.

She responded: “I would like to see better roads, improved water supply and proper sanitation facilities. These things would make life easier for everyone.”

For many residents, the challenges are not simply inconveniences; they are issues that affect their work, movement and quality of life. They therefore want their concerns to receive serious attention rather than being overlooked.

What message do you have for the authorities?

Adwoa Asante: “We are appealing to the authorities – the Sunyani Municipal Assembly, the Member of Parliament for Sunyani East and other relevant agencies to listen to our concerns and work towards solving these problems. Baakoniaba is developing, so the people also deserve better facilities.”

Conclusion
The concerns expressed by the residents show that more attention is needed to improve living conditions in Baakoniaba. Residents believe that development can be achieved when authorities provide the necessary facilities while community members also contribute by protecting public property and maintaining clean surroundings.

Baakoniaba has a promising future, but that future depends on addressing the challenges faced by its people today. The voices of its residents should not only be heard – they should inspire action!
