Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has alleged that some governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) approached him to prevent the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from fielding candidates in their states ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Wike made the disclosure during a media chat on Wednesday while speaking on his political relationship with some APC governors and his continued support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.

The former Rivers State governor specifically mentioned Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq and Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma, accusing them of working against him despite his support for the President and, in some cases, their previous political relationship.

According to Wike, some politicians were more interested in creating the impression that they were the ones closest to or working most closely with Tinubu.

“You see, the problem with people, they want them to be seen, that they are the people working for the President. I don’t do that,” Wike said.

When asked whether he was referring to AbdulRazaq, the FCT minister replied, “Yes.”

Wike accused the Kwara governor of driving what he described as a campaign against him, particularly over allegations that he was sponsoring candidates in the state ahead of the 2027 elections.

He questioned the political implications of the removal of three senators and a member of the House of Representatives from the APC, arguing that the affected politicians could seek alternative platforms ahead of the elections.

“Now, these senators you removed, you have no place for them. Therefore, do you prefer them to go to ADC or to go to NDC?” he asked.

Wike said allowing such politicians to defect to opposition platforms could work against Tinubu, while those who align with him would be more likely to support the President.

“Now, if they come to me, obviously, they will vote for Mr President,” he said.

The FCT minister also dismissed allegations that he was attempting to plant or sponsor candidates across various states, saying some APC governors had themselves approached him over the PDP’s participation in their states.

Wike said he had never entered into an agreement that supporting Tinubu meant preventing the PDP from fielding candidates in the 2027 elections.

“I said, ‘Ah, in any case, did I reach any agreement that, look, now that we are supporting Mr President, PDP will not have any candidate anywhere?’” he said.

His comments come amid heightened political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, with politicians moving between the APC, PDP and emerging opposition platforms, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

Wike also addressed reports of a disagreement between him and Uzodinma, insisting that the Imo governor was fully aware of the support he had received from him over the years.

“The governor of Imo State knows the support I gave to him very well,” Wike said.

Despite the reported tensions with some APC governors, Wike maintained that his overriding political objective was to support Tinubu’s re-election.

He said he could not afford to allow the President to lose the 2027 election, warning that he could become a prime target for political retaliation should an opposition candidate such as former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar or former Anambra State governor Peter Obi emerge victorious.

“But you see, in politics, I’m not a threat. My concern is, I will support Mr President. If you watch what’s happening today and look at it, peradventure anything happens and Mr President fails today, I will be the first politician that Atiku, Obi will hunt for his head,” he said.

“I will be the first politician. I challenge anybody. So, I won’t make that mistake, to be sleeping to see the President lose his election. No,” Wike added.
