President Robert Mugabe''''s party failed to reverse opposition’s party takeover of the Zimbabwean parliament as partial official results from Harare showed on Saturday. The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission(ZEC) said 14 out of the 23 seats had been recounted so far, and the original result was confirmed in all of them. Mugabe party, ZANU-PF ,needed to reverse the vote in at least 14 districts in order to keep a majority in the parliament, however none of the first 13 seats recounted were changed, according to ZEC Chief Operations Officer Utolile Silaigwana It would be recalled that the initial results made public in the days after the March 29 election gave the opposition party, the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) a majority, but the ZEC began recounting 23 voting districts last week after President Robert Mugabe''''s ZANU-PF party complained of count irregularities. With 10 constituencies recounts remaining to be announced, the MDC is assured of a majority, said Silaigwana From unfolding developments it appear the Zimbabweans are taking the bull by the horn. They are rising up to challenge Mr. Robert Mugabe, the 84 year President who has ruled and impoverished the once rich southern African country for the 28 years or since independence. For the first time in the country history the opposition party won majority in the parliament, sign posting the end of Mugabe era. But the presidential election results were put on hold even though its seem the opposition must have won. Informal sources says Mugabe is considering relinguishing power. No news yet; but other signals seem to suggest that there might be a run-off since none of the parties got up to 50per cent majority. (MORE UPDATE COMING)
